MINNESOTA – The University of Minnesota president is proposing tuition hikes at all campuses including U of M Crookston and U of M Morris.
Dr. Rebecca Cunningham announced the university system had to make tough financial decisions brought on by $42 million in cuts from the federal government to research funding and what she calls uncertain state funding.
Under the plan, which will need to be approved by the Board of Regents, all students at the Crookston campus and U of M Duluth could see tuition go up four percent.
All Morris students could see a five percent tuition hike along with undergraduate students from Minnesota going to the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses.
And for all out of state students, tuition could rise by as much as seven-and-a-half percent.
Cunningham’s budget asks for U of M chancellors and deans to cut seven percent in spending from each college including from academic programs, student services, research, outreach activities and general operations.
Flag Family News reached out to the University of Minnesota to see if Cunningham is calling for cuts to the athletics department at any system schools, but we haven’t heard back.
“The University of Minnesota is not immune to the unprecedented challenges facing higher education,” Cunningham went on to say in her announcement. “We are making tough, strategic decisions to protect our mission and secure our future.”
“Our best response is to come together in support of the University of Minnesota’s mission with a focus on financial sustainability and strategic investment,” Cunningham said. “Maintaining the status quo is not an option.”
“Our response to this historic time will be multifaceted as we remain diligent in efforts to limit expenses and thoughtful in formulating new strategies that prioritize our core mission, and assess our assets to best position our university for success for generations to come.”
