Turnberg responds to letter to the editor

(FARGO) – A Fargo City Commissioner is disputing a letter to the editor stating that she has not received any communications regarding people fearful for their lives walking on the trails underneath the bridge in downtown Fargo.

“This letter to the editor is laughable,” Fargo City Commissioner Michelle Turnberg said Thursday afternoon. “Why would I lie about anything about this?”

She said that, regardless of political background and beliefs, there is a homeless problem downtown. But how to deal with it, she said, may ‘differ at how we look to try and solve it.’

In addition to emails to her city email, Turnberg said she has received personal messages, Facebook messages, phone calls and messages to her personal email address.

Additionally, residents have come to the city commission with concerns.

“People have come to city commission meetings and spoken out in public, on public record, and spoke to me after the meeting,” she said.

Tunberg said her concerns are for the safety of those in Fargo.

“As a female who uses the park system, walking and biking, it is very unnerving,” she said. “I always have pepper spray when passing through this area.”

Turnberg said she has seen drug needles on the trails.
