FARGO, ND – A man being south for not being in compliance with sex offender registration requirements was arrested after entering the Red River to avoid his arrest.
Fargo Police Sergeant Chris Mathson says police were called at after 3 p.m. to a report of a sex offender not in compliance with registration requirements.
While near 2nd Street North and 1st Avenue North, the offender, identified as Raybert Joseph Littlewind, Jr., entered the river.
Using rescue boats, officers with the Fargo and Moorhead Police Departments and firefighters from both Fargo and Moorhead collaborated to apprehend Littlewind. He was in the river near the Fargo side, but was taken off the river in Moorhead, near the Hjemkomst Center, for safety reasons.
He was subsequently arrested for failure to register as a sex offender, preventing arrest, refusal to halt and false information to law enforcement. He was transported to a local medical facility for medical clearance before being taken to the Cass County Jail.
No one was injured.
