DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A Waubun woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she assaulted officers and jail staff in Detroit Lakes.
Court documents say 22-year-old Katie Jolene Reich was arrested early Thursday morning after officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment building in Detroit Lakes.
According to the complaint, police were called to the building around 12:45 a.m. for reports of an intoxicated woman pounding on doors, screaming, and refusing to leave.
Detroit Lakes Police Officers found Reich inside the building, trying to force her way into an apartment she claimed was hers. A woman inside the apartment told police it was not Reich’s residence.
When an officer tried to detain Reich, the complaint says she became combative. Reich allegedly kicked the officer’s leg and attempted to kick his torso while screaming vulgar language at him.
Officers placed Reich in a squad car, but had to pull over when she started kicking the rear window and hitting her head. While officers tried to re-secure her and apply leg restraints, Reich allegedly kicked another officer in the chest, spit on his face, and bit him on the neck and ear.
The complaint says the assaults continued at the Becker County Jail. While staff tried to secure Reich in a restraint chair, she allegedly spit at correctional officers, including a sergeant.
Reich is now charged with two felony counts of fourth-degree assault. One count is for throwing bodily fluids at a peace officer. The other is for transferring bodily fluids at a correctional employee.
She also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault for physically assaulting a peace officer and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.
If convicted on the most serious charge, Reich faces up to three years in prison or a $6,000 fine, or both. She remains in custody at the Becker County Jail.
