West Fargo continues to discuss a potential short-term rental ordinance

WEST FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Monday night, West Fargo leaders took the next step towards a short-term rental ordinance.

The topic was previously assigned to a committee to review and ultimately come up with an action plan.

Previous ideas included occupancy limits and parking minimums.

During Monday night’s meeting, the committee took a look at other cities’ short-term rental ordinances.

“I encourage the city to require the use of booking platforms or systems that perform background checks. Not just on the booking person but on all guests,” said one concerned West Fargo resident.

“Most of us operate good Airbnbs, respect our neighbors, give them our cell phone numbers, introduce ourselves, and stay accountable to them,” said one Airbnb owner.

A new survey will be put out to let West Fargo residents share their thoughts. A survey, committee members think, will provide a lot of insight.

“There’s an argument for both. On one hand, in our area, we have medical reasons, and we have events. Reasons why people would need them. Some of the other negatives, as a police department, those are the ones that we’re familiar with. The commotion and the problems that they bring. I think there’s a happy medium somewhere in the middle of that,” said Captain Randy Burkhartsmeier with West Fargo Police, who also serves on the committee.

The survey will run from August 1st to August 22nd.
