(Los Angeles, CA) -- "Top Gun -- Maverick" is making history.

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 hit movie starring Tom Cruise earned the most money of any film opening on the Memorial Day weekend. "Maverick" grossed 124-million-dollars in the U.S. and Canada. That breaks the previous holiday record of 114-million-dollars set in 2007 by "Pirates of the Caribbean -- At World's End."

"Maverick" is also the first movie starring Cruise to make over a hundred-million-dollars in its opening weekend.

Rounding out this week's Top Five are "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," "The Bob's Burgers Movie," "Downton Abbey -- A New Era" and "The Bad Guys."
