(Silver Spring, MD) -- A massive heat wave that began in the Southwest is moving into the Central and Southern U.S.

More than 100 million Americans from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes are under heat alerts through the week as temperatures are expected to be in or near triple digits.

All of Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Illinois, Iowa and Indiana are under heat warnings as well as parts of a dozen other states. Meteorologists say the heat is due to a large area of high pressure known as a "heat dome."

As for North Dakota and the Fargo area, we are expected to hit near triple digits over Father's Day weekend. Click here for your up to date forecast and to look ahead.
