(Stockholm) -- The 2022 Nobel Prize in economic sciences goes to a trio of U.S.-based economists, including former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke who led the central bank during the 2008 financial crisis.

He's sharing this year's prize with Douglas Diamond from the University of Chicago and Washington University's Philip Dybvig. They were recognized earlier Monday for their work on banks and financial crises.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences credited all three with having provided the foundation for our modern understanding of the necessity of banks, what makes them vulnerable and how their collapse can trigger financial meltdowns.
