(Fargo, ND) -- Scammers are targeting people who apply for student loan forgiveness.
The Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday that criminals are setting up websites claiming to apply on borrowers behalf.
The FTC is stressing that the only legitimate application site, and the only place to apply is studentaid.gov. There's no fee involved and anyone who guarantees approval or quicker forgiveness, for a fee, is a scammer.
The real application asks for only the borrowers name, birth date, Social Security number, phone number, and address -- nothing else.
