(Fargo, ND) -- At least seven people are dead and a dozen or more are injured after tornadoes ripped through Alabama and Georgia on Thursday.

The National Weather Service said some of the worst damage is in Selma, Alabama, where a "large and extremely dangerous tornado" blasted the historic city and surrounding area.

About 40 homes were damaged or destroyed when a tornado cut a 20-mile swath across two rural communities northeast of Selma.

The storm in Georgia appeared to have pushed a freight train off the tracks about 50 miles southeast of Atlanta.
