Senate passes bill to avoid government shutdown, Biden expected to sign

(Washington, D.C) -- A bill to fund the government and avoid a shutdown is headed to President Biden's desk.  

The Senate passed the bill in a 87-to-11 vote yesterday, with just 60 votes needed to pass. In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson was able to see the measure pass with mostly Democratic votes after dozens of Republicans opposed the plan due to a lack of spending cuts. 

The continuing resolutions passed make it so the government will remain funded until various future points. This includes Agriculture, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs through January 19th, and the Defense Department and other government departments until February 2nd. 

President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill.
