MINNESOTA – After an accused undocumented semi driver with a commercial drivers license allegedly killed three people while making an illegal U-turn in Florida earlier this month, questions have been raised about Minnesota possibly allowing illegal immigrants to also get a CDL.
The Trump administration the Florida driver, Harjinder Singh, who’s originally from India, got a work permit and commercial driver’s license in California.
Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety has told Flag Family News the state’s “driver’s license for all” law, which was passed by the legislature in 2023, does not apply to CDLs.
Those who live in the state can get a standard, Class D driver’s license without proof of immigration status if they pass written and road tests.
In an application, undocumented people need to show two documents with their name and date of birth and provide their Minnesota address.
DPS has said information provided on license and identification card applications is protected under state law.
“Having licensed, trained and insured drivers in our communities make us all safer,” the DPS said in a fact sheet on the “drivers license for all” law.
Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told the Associated Press issuing a CDL to someone in the country illegally is “asinine.”
Nineteen states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico allow illegal immigrants to have access to getting a standard driver’s license.
