WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Act has passed the House by one vote.
The bill, if it becomes law, would make big cuts to Medicaid with nearly eight million Americans losing coverage over the next 10 years according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. It would also add new requirements to food assistance and Medicaid, eliminate taxes on tips while putting billions toward fighting illegal immigration and a nationwide missile defense system.
Lawmakers approved the massive spending plan Thursday morning in a 215 to 214 vote. All Democrats and two Republicans,, Congressmen Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio, voted against the bill. Republican House Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. Andy Harris of Michigan voted present. Two Republicans didn’t vote on the measure. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said Rep. Andrew Garbarino of New York fell asleep. Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona also wasn’t in the House chamber during the vote.
“This legislative package is a big win for North Dakota families, energy producers, farmers, and every American who’s tired of Washington’s waste and overreach,” Republican North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak said. “This bill delivers real solutions: it secures our border, lowers taxes, begins to restore accountability, supports our farmers, and unleashes American energy. I’m proud to have played a key role in advancing this legislation to help get our country back on track.”
This bill will deliver vital tax relief for farmers, families, and small business across Minnesota and America. Proud to be delivering on President Trump’s agenda!” Republican Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach posted on X.
“The Republicans’ budget will make America hungrier, poorer and sicker. Parents struggling to afford groceries for their families and seniors living on fixed incomes will have their food taken away if this bill becomes law,” Democratic Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig, who’s running for Senate, said on X.
