(Bismarck, ND)  --  State Parks and Recreation officials are cautioning you to be careful on the ice.  First off, they say, be aware of the thickness of the ice, and make sure it's sufficient for your planned activity.

Water safety experts say a minimum thickness of four inches of ice is required for fishing and skating.  For snowmobiling and ATV activities, the ice should be at least seven inches thick.

Meanwhile, they say, pay attention to the color of the ice.  Blue or "clear" ice is typically hard and solid.  However, you should always keep your distance from gray, dark or porous areas on the ice.  Above all, keep in mind that no ice is 100-percent safe.
