(Bismarck, ND) -- Over 17-thousand BNSF union workers that include North Dakotans are set to go on strike over the railroad's attendance policy.

Representatives with the SMART Transportation Union say the policy attempts to force workers to report for duty with no regard for their medical condition. BNSF says the workers are needed employees and that the new system is designed to provide greater flexibility to help workers make "informed decisions about their work schedules."

BNSF says their policy is in line with practices across the transportation industry.
