(Bismarck, ND)  --  The search for a new North Dakota land commissioner is narrowed down to three finalists. The search committee is set to interview the candidates this week and will make a recommendation to the full Board of University and School Lands.

The move comes after former commissioner Jodi Smith stepped down October 28th, 2021. She was appointed by the state Board of University and School Lands, known as the Land Board, in 2017 and was reappointed to a second term last June, but walked away five months into her term to take "a public sector position outside of state government."

Governor Doug Burgum chairs the five-member board, which is expected to interview the recommended candidate when it meets February 17th.
