(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota companies with ties to Ukraine and Russia are working to connect with their employees and officials as war broke out Thursday.

Companies such as Medtronic, Ecolab and Cargill have had to make quick decisions as conditions quickly deteriorated. A Cargill spokeswoman says the company's priority is the safety of its people in the region. Cargill has 500 employees in the country and many were sent home from company facilities. Others were told to not come to work Thursday and to find a secure location for themselves and their families.

A shipping vessel chartered by Cargill was hit by a missile early in the first day of fighting. The crews is safe and accounted for.
