(St. Paul, MN) -- Governor Tim Walz is expected to call for an increase in proposed rebate checks.

The governor is expected to appeal directly to taxpayers with his plan to issue rebates from the state's record budget surplus. Walz say negotiations with lawmakers over the issue have broken down.

The governor wants to return half of the state's projected nine-billion dollar surplus to the people. That would be enough to provide two-thousand dollars to joint filers and one-thousand dollars to single filers.
