(Albert Lea, MN) -- A strain of the herpes virus is being blamed for thousands of dead fish in Albert Lea.

Up to two-thousand dead carp were found at Fountain Lake Tuesday. The Minnesota DNR confirms the deaths were caused by the koi herpes virus, known as K-H-V.

Though it's unknown how the carp got the virus, there is no risk to humans or other fish species.
