I-94 closes between Fargo and Bismarck, North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain details road conditions on WDAY Midday

(Fargo, ND) -- The North Dakota Highway Patrol is sharing an update regarding winter storm conditions and urging people to stay home.

Brian Niewind is a Captain with the North Dakota Highway Patrol. He joined WDAY Midday to discuss the road conditions, which are degrading due to a winter storm expected to bring eight to fourteen inches of snow to The Red River Valley. 

"Depending on the road conditions, a lot of times, the North Dakota Department of Transportation doesn't have 24 hour coverage statewide, so there are going to be some pretty bad spots out there at night," said Niewind, "[That] can create some issues, such as jack-knifed semi's that are blocking the roadways."

Niewind says in conditions like this, try to stay off the roads if you can. If you decide travel is necessary, the North Dakota Highway Patrol suggests carrying an emergency pack with supplies that would be helpful in case your vehicle gets stuck. This includes items like blankets, non-perishable foods, water, a cell-phone charger, and a small shovel. Additional information from the North Dakota Highway Patrol can be found here.
