(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is launching a civil investigation into the sale of Kia and Hyundai vehicles susceptible to theft in Minnesota.
Ellison said that the investigation aims to determine whether the manufacturers violated state consumer protection and public nuisance laws by knowingly selling Minnesotans vehicles that didn't have industry-standard anti-theft technology.
“The drastic increase in Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts is continuing to threaten public safety and do serious harm to our communities,” Attorney General Ellison said. “With this investigation, we will follow where the facts lead us and will continue to use all the tools of the law to help keep Minnesotans safe.”
The state has seen a drastic increase in Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts, which Ellison says threatens the public safety.
Reported thefts of vehicles made by the two manufacturers has jumped 836-percent in Minneapolis and 611-percent in St. Paul over last year's numbers.
