(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota Officials are urging for residents excited to get on lakes, rivers, and ponds to practice extra caution.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says 30% of fatal boating accidents happen between late February and early May, when the water is sitting at frigid temperatures and life-jacket use is not as prevalent. Experts are urging boaters to wear life jackets, ensure your watercraft is functioning properly, distribute the weight on them evenly, and to watch out for winds and storms.
