(Fargo, ND) -- An official with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms has a reminder for Minnesotans who are considering becoming users of recreational marijuana.

"With Minnesota enacting their cannabis law which takes effect August 1st, we wanted Minnesotans to know that distinction so that they would be informed and educated in order to make informed decisions," said ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge, Jeff Reed.

Reed says federal law prohibits people who use marijuana from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms and ammunition. Under federal law, marijuana is considered a controlled substance, and federal law does not permit the drug to be used recreationally.

The applicable federal laws are the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.
