96-year-old Minnesota veteran sues U. S. Defense Department for Purple Heart

(St. Peter, MN)  --  A 96-year-old St. Pater war veteran is suing the U.S. Department of Defense to award him the Purple Heart.

The daughters of Earl Meyer have spent a decade trying to get the Army to give him the prestigious honor for being wounded while serving.

The Army Board for Correction of Military Records has turned down the request, citing the lack of evidence.

Meyer says the lack of proof comes from the fact he never visited an aid station after he was bandaged when a piece of shrapnel from a mortar struck him in the thigh in 1951.

The plaintiff has the support of Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, whose father shared barracks with Meyer during boot camp.
