(Fargo, ND) -- Help is available for North Dakotans who are problem gamblers.

"The research and the things we've learned about gambling addiction in recent years clearly help us understand that it is a brain disease, brain disorder, and that there are chemical changes that happen within the brain. There is actually a biological change that occurs when certain individuals are gambling," said Lisa Vig-Johnson, Gambling Disorder Clinical Lead for North Dakota Health and Human Services.

She is speaking out on the topic after Governor Doug Burgum declared March Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

Vig-Johnson says her department does not have a count on how many people in the state are problem gamblers.

She says her agency will soon perform a study to determine a rough estimate.

Vig-Johnson says anyone who would like help can find resources and support online at GamblerND.com.
