School Resource Officers return to Clay County Schools upon signing of bill in Minnesota

(Clay County, MN) --  School resource officers have returned to schools in Clay County.

The Sheriff's Office says Deputy Lee and Deputy Kellen have resumed their SRO duties in the Ulen-Hitterdal and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton School Districts. Clay County was among many departments statewide that decided to pull their SROs from schools last year following a law which limited when SRO’s could restrain students, and also banned choke holds. Governor Walz signed a new law earlier this month to clarify that legislation and most SRO programs are starting back up in Minnesota schools.

As integral members of their school community, school resource officers serve students and teachers day in and day out. This bill provides comprehensive guidance and clarity, allowing school resource officers to continue to do their jobs effectively,” said Governor Walz upon signing the bill on March 14th. “I’m grateful to legislators, school leaders, education advocates, youth voices, and law enforcement for working together to get this done and ensure we’re keeping our kids safe.”
