(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota lawmakers are considering a bill to deter copper wire thieves by requiring a license for anyone selling copper wire in the state.

The House Committee advanced the bill yesterday, and the Senate is set to hear its version today. Mayors from across the state are backing the bill due to the costly repairs and public safety hazards posed by the thefts. However, opponents argue that the plan could reduce recycling by businesses and individuals legally permitted to sell copper wire.
