SAN DIEGO, CA — There is a type of magic mushroom gaining popularity across the nation. But it’s not the one you may be thinking about.
Scientists at UC San Diego warned about the growing market for Amanita muscaria. Researchers say it may be sparked in part by clinical research supporting the safety and efficacy of psilocybin. That mushroom is used as a treatment for depression. However, doctors say Amanita muscaria has properties that actually mimic fentanyl. The mushroom can cause space distortion, unawareness of time and colored hallucinations. The authors recommend the FDA place this mushroom on the controlled substances list.
If that fails they say precautions such as setting age restrictions and accurate dosing standards should be followed.
