Minnesota overdose death rate drops significantly

ST PAUL – For the second straight year, Minnesota is announcing a drop in overdose deaths and hospitalizations.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Tuesday that deaths dropped 26 percent year-over-year from 2023 to 2024, and hospital-treated nonfatal overdoses dropped 19 percent over the same time.

“This is incredible progress and a testament to the shared goals, dedication, and overdose prevention efforts happening across Minnesota,” said Governor Walz. “Together, we’re saving lives and showing what’s possible when we meet this crisis with compassion and action. This is measurable progress, and we’re going to keep working to save lives.”

The largest decrease in deaths was 31 percent in Greater Minnesota counties, while metro counties saw a 23 percent decrease.
