Minnesota Secretary of State says no to U.S. Senate run

(SAINT PAUL, MINN) — Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon will not run for retiring Senator Tina Smith’s seat.

His decision leaves the Democratic field to Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, Congresswoman Angie Craig, and ex-state senator Melissa Lopez Franzen. Sources say Simon is more interested in running for governor, but only if Governor Tim Walz doesn’t run for re-election.

Walz said he’ll announce this summer whether he’ll seek a third term as governor.
