RICHLAND COUNTY, N.D. – The North Dakota Highway Patrol is sharing a public reminder why slowing down during snowstorms is critical.
“Yesterday, a five-vehicle crash occurred on I-29 near mile marker 19 during near whiteout conditions. Initial fender-bender crashes occurred on the shoulder,” the Patrol said in a social media post. “While first responders were working to reach the scene, a semi-truck traveling approximately 65 mph struck the crash scene, resulting in two injuries.”
The Patrol said it took an hour for crews to safely arrive, citing extremely low visibility.
“In conditions like this, stopped vehicles, emergency lights, and people on foot are nearly impossible to see until you are right on top of them,” the post continued.
Authorities remind drivers to slow down and turn lights to the ON position, along with increasing following distance and reconsidering travel during severe winter weather.
