Report shows South Dakota penitentiary ‘has reached the end of its useful life’

(PIERRE, SD) — The South Dakota penitentiary has reached the end of its useful life.

The Project Prison Reset task force shared the news from consultants Arrington Watkins. Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen, who chairs the task force, said the report found that the prison system ‘is overcrowded and requires a new facility.’

The report analyzed the state of the current prison system, which includes the penitentiary, the Jameson Prison Annex and Sioux Falls Minimum Center. The consultant says they’ll be evaluating potential sites for a new prison in a second phase.
