South Dakota Governor donates funds to reilluminate Mount Rushmore during government shutdown

MOUNT RUSHMORE, SD – The lights illuminating Mount Rushmore have been off since the beginning of the federal government shutdown.

But thanks to South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden and others, the lights will be turned back on.

On Saturday, Governor Larry Rhoden announced he personally donated funds to illuminate the faces of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Governor Rhoden’s funds will illuminate the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln for the next week.

“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of freedom – and I refuse to let its light dim! Even when Washington shuts down, American freedom will keep shining bright right here in South Dakota,” he said. “Thank you to the Mount Rushmore Society and the National Park Service for working with us to bring this vision to life. I am proud that the faces of our great Presidents will continue to shine bright and serve as a beacon of freedom!”

Rhoden said there have been others who have pledged money to cover additional days past the next week if the shutdown continues.
