Last night, the Moorhead Spuds girls hockey team defeated the Roseau Rams 3-1 in the Section 8AA championship game. The victory propels the Spuds to their first state tournament berth since 2006.

Moorhead started the scoring midway through the first period on a Bria Holm power play goal. Then, two minutes into the second period the Rams struck back tying the game a 1-1. The third period turned into the Kate Kosobud show… at least when it came to scoring goals! Kosobud scored at the 8:30 mark of the third period to give the Spuds a 2-1 lead. Towards the tail end of the final period Roseau pulled its goaltender and Kosobud struck again, giving the Spuds a 3-1 lead.

Once the dust settled the Spuds were hoisting the Section Championship trophy after downing the Rams by a score of 3-1.

Moorhead will find out its seed in the MSHSL Girls Hockey AA State Tournament tomorrow morning. The state tournament will begin on Thursday, Feb 23.

Larry Knutson will have all the play-by-play coverage of the Spuds’ state tournament run on WDAY Radio.
