On Tuesday, the University of North Dakota signed Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mallory Bernhard to a contract extension through the 2025-26 season, Director of Athletics Bill Chaves announced.

Bernhard took the reins as the interim head coach during the 2020-21 season. Then in March 2021 she was named head coach, becoming the first former student-athlete of the program to take over the team.

During the 2022-23 Fighting Hawks racked up an 11-7 Summit League record, marking the best conference record since UND went 13-1 in the 2013-14 season. After accepting an invitation to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) later this week, Bernhard led North Dakota to its first postseason tournament appearance since 2016-17. Multiple players have earned conference awards under Bernhard, including Kacie Borowicz who has earned All-Summit League First Team honors in back-to-back seasons.

Bernhard had high praise for the University of North Dakota saying, “It meant so much to me as an alumna to be given the opportunity to lead this program, and it means even more to know that our administration believes in the direction we’re headed”. She continued, “I am incredibly grateful for this continued opportunity and will continue to pour my heart and soul into this program. We have an unbelievable group of young women that represent the University of North Dakota women’s basketball so well both on and off the court and we will continue to strive to make our fans, alumni as well as University proud.”
