Judge + Anthony hit homers in USA’s WBC win over Mexico

Team USA baseball continued to impress in Pool B play on Monday night. They rode a stellar pitching start from Paul Skenes and a pair of home runs to a 5-3 win over Mexico.

This was USA’s first World Baseball Classic win over Mexico since 2006.

Paul Skenes got the start on the bump tossing four shutout innings while striking out seven batters. Scenes only allowed two baserunners with one hit and one walk, but stranded both on base. Skenes earned the win. Garrett Cleavinger tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Matthew Boyd surrendered three runs over 2 1/3 innings of work, including two home runs, but did strike out three batters. Griffin Jax recorded two outs, earning the hold. Garrett Whitlock closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning that included two strikeouts en route to earning the save.

USA only scored in the third inning, but they drove in five runs in that frame. Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer followed by Roman Anthony’s three-run shot later in the inning. Minnesota Twins outfielder, Byron Buxton, got the start in center field, but went o-3 at the plate with a walk.

The Americans improved to 3-0 in Pool B play with the victory punching their ticket into the knockout round, with their seeding still to be determined.

USA will wrap up pool play on Tuesday, March 10 against Italy with first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m. and game coverage available on Fox Sports 1.
