Minot State announces Herbst as 16th MBB HC in program history

Minot State Vice President for Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics, Kevin Harmon, has announced the next men’s basketball head coach. The new leader of Beaver men’s hoops is a familiar name in Randall Herbst.

Herbst is returning to Minot State after a three year stint at the University of North Dakota. He spent the past three seasons as the top assistant coach under head coach Paul Sather in Grand Forks. Herbst first stint in Minot was from 2020-22 where he served as the top assistant under former men’s basketball head coach, Matt Murken.

In a statement released by the university, Herbst gave his first comments on rejoining Minot State saying, “I am truly honored and excited to be back at Minot State University. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be a head coach again. I look forward to bringing an exciting style of play to the Magic City.”

Additionally, Harmon gave his thoughts on the renewed partnership, “On behalf of Minot State University, I’m thrilled to welcome Randall Herbst as our next head men’s basketball coach.” He continued, “Coach Herbst brings a proven track record of success in the NSIC, and his deep understanding of our conference and region made him the ideal choice to lead our program. His prior experience in Minot and strong ties throughout the Upper Midwest will be invaluable as we continue to build a championship culture at Minot State University. We’re excited for what the future holds under his leadership.”

Herbst is the 16th head men’s basketball coach in program history. He is replacing Murken who departed Minot early this month for an assistant coaching position with the men’s basketball team at the University of South Dakota.
