Minneapolis (WDAY Radio) – The Moorhead Spuds football team will play for their first State Championship since 1987 next Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The Spuds defeated Lakeville South, Friday 26-14 in a hard-fought defensive battle in the Minnesota State 6A semifinal at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Moorhead defense held the high-powered Lakeville South offense, which put up 514 yards against Maple Grove last week, to just 228 offensive yards for the night. Lakeville South was limited to 205 rushing yards.
The game was tied, 7-7 after two quarters; In the third quarter Lakeville South took advantage of a Moorhead turnover which set up a two-play, 20-yard drive. Moorhead would then answer with scoring drives of 71, 92, and 92 yards in the second half to seal the victory.
Moorhead quarterback Jett Feeney, who missed three games because of a shoulder injury, threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards and another score.
The Spuds will play #4 Edina next Friday, a rematch of a game the Spuds won at the end of the regular season, 51-44. Kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m., pregame coverage on WDAY Radio begins at 6:30 p.m.
