Twins sweep attempt falls short against Rays in extra innings

The Minnesota Twins sweep attempt fell short in a 7-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays  in 10 innings.

Joe Ryan gave up two runs over six innings with eight strikeouts in a no-decision. Brock Stewart and Louie Varland tossed a shutout inning apiece in relief. Griffin Jax gave up two innings out of the pen. Justin Topa gave up three runs (one earned) in a single inning and was tagged with the loss.

Newly named All-Star Byron Buxton hit a solo home run to lead off the game. It was his 20th long ball of the season. Harrison Bader hit his 10th home run of the season and drove in three total runs.

The Twins have an off day on Monday before welcoming the Chicago Cubs to Target Field for a series beginning on Tuesday night. First pitch will be slated for 6:40 p.m. with Simeon Woods-Richardson scheduled to get the nod for Minnesota with Shota Imanaga countering for Chicago.
