On Tuesday, February 24, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced University of North Junior defenseman, Abram Wiebe, as the leagues Defenseman of the Week. This is the third consecutive week he has garnered the honor. Wiebe joins Denver’s Joey LaLeggia (2014-15) as only the second player in the conferences history to earn the honor in three consecutive weeks.
In a pair of home games against St. Cloud State last weekend, he recorded four total points on one goal and three assists. He racked up a +5 in the plus/minus rating along with not being on the ice for any surrendered goals on the weekend (SCSU scored eight goals). Additionally, he blocked three shots over the weekend.
Wiebe has totaled 10 points in February on two goals and eight assists, leading all NCHC blue liners over the month. He now has 25 total points on the season, the most of all UND defensemen.
No. 3 North Dakota will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a pair of games at No. 4 Western Michigan beginning on Friday night at 6 p.m. UND has a chance to secure the programs seventh Penrose Cup this weekend.
