What is the LRC? It’s a method to forecast the weather long term using a “cycling” pattern throughout the year. Each year is different, a 30 day cycle, maybe a 42 day cycle, or possibly up to a 50 day cycle. Once the pattern sets up late fall, we can time out storm systems that will effect our area from the winter all the way through the following summer until a new pattern starts up the next fall.
Once the sun sets at the North Pole and it goes “dark” (around Oct. 6th) we take a look at our weather charts aloft:

We will monitor the upper air pattern and look for this same pattern to show up again later in the fall. Once this pattern shows up again, we have our LRC cycle length set.
Now, lets take a look at the FIRST storm of the LRC cycle around Oct. 11th/12th of this fall:

This pattern was our first “big” storm of the season. Once we see this pattern return, we will know that the pattern is set. However, I don’t see anything like that this week….later next week, the models are hinting at something similar…..stay tuned.
