Record setting severe weather season

The final tally is in for severe weather season 2025 and it was impressive.

North Dakota Records

The total number of tornadoes for 2025 already set a record in North Dakota, and now it’s up to 82 after the final yearly severe weather breakdown has been released. Here are the details from the National Weather Service Bismarck Office:

  • North Dakota had a total of 82 tornadoes, setting a new record for the number of tornadoes in a year (previously 61 in 1999). This number includes two brief tornadoes, which were not in the initial end-of-year tally. The official total number of tornadoes for the year was 82.
  • North Dakota tied the record for the number of tornadoes in a calendar day, with 24 tornadoes on June 20, 2025 (tying the 24 that occurred on June 11, 1976)

The most intense tornado in North Dakota in 2025 was the Enderlin EF5-rated tornado that hit during the June 20th-21st severe weather outbreak. The tornado caused EF5 damage when it struck a train in Ransom County, then caused EF4 damage and three fatalities in Cass County.

Severe weather season 2026 is right around the corner and what do I think it will hold for our area?  Although I’m not expecting as active of a season, I do believe along with the LRC model that we will have an above normal season in regards to severe weather with above normal temperatures.
