Boy survives near drowning near Vergas

(Vergas, Minn.) — A juvenile boy was transported to the hospital after a near drowning near Vergas, Minn.

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Officce, the incident happened before 1 p.m. Tuesday northeast of the city of Vergas. The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a rural Vergas woman who had discovered her son had fallen into open water near her home and was not breathing.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, Vergas Rescue, Vergas Fire, Perham Ambulance and Lifelink III Medical Transport responded to the scene.

After arriving on scene, it was discovered the woman was outside with her three young children when she discovered her son was no longer by her side. She began looking for the child before finding him floating face down in the water behind the remnants of a fallen down barn on the property.

The area of water the child was found in was reportedly dry prior to recent rainfall, but was approximately four-and-a-half feet deep at the time of the incident.

Life saving measures were provided and the child was conscious before being transported for further medical treatment.
