(Fargo, ND) -- Fargo School Board candidate Kristin Nelson says she supports the decision by district Superintendent Dr. Rupak Gandhi not to follow a state law, which requires school staff to inform parents, if parents ask, how their child identifies while at school.

"One supportive adult in a queer students life can reduce the risk of suicide by 40 percent. It's not a small statistic. So we do need to keep supporting our queer kids," said Nelson.

Nelson made the comment during a candidate's debate hosted by WDAY Radio.

Nelson is one of four candidates, out of nine running for school board, who are endorsed by the Fargo teachers union.
