Fargo landfill fire appears to be caused by lithium-ion battery

FARGO, N.D. – A fire at Fargo’s landfill is said to have been caused by an item not permitted there.

Fargo Fire crews were called to the landfill early this morning on a report of smoke. When they arrived, crews determined the smoke was coming from the landfill and contacted landfill staff.

Staff arrived by 1 a.m. and began moving dirt to smother the fire and extinguish it. Within approximately 30 minutes, the fire was fully contained by covering it with dirt and sand. Water was not used, as it can contribute to fire spread in landfill conditions due to unknown materials or chemicals.

A lithium-ion battery appears to be the cause, according to supervisor Dustin Halsne. He said those materials should be properly disposed of through a battery recycler or at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
