Merck Asks FDA for Emergency Use of Anti-COVID-19 Pill

(Kenilworth, NJ) -- Merck is asking the Food and Drug Administration to authorize emergency use of its experimental antiviral pill to treat COVID-19 in adults.

The drugmaker's request Monday comes after phase three clinical trial data showed the medication reduced the chances of hospitalization for newly diagnosed patients by about 50-percent.

Officials with Merck say adding a pill to the fight against the coronavirus would be a game-changer. If approved, the pills could be a stalwart in homes across the country by the end of the year.
