(Fairfax, VA)  --  The head of the National Rifle Association is stepping down.

Wayne LaPierre announced his decision to resign just days before his civil trial in New York is set to begin.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has accused LaPierre and other current and former NRA leaders of violating nonprofit laws.

In a statement, LaPierre said he "will never stop supporting the NRA and its fight to defend Second Amendment freedom."
