(St. Paul, MN) -- An audit of the Minnesota Department of Education found the agency's efforts to close achievement gaps to be ineffective.

The Legislative auditor's report noted that there is a lack of clarity in state law defining the agency's role. Auditors wrote that the results were troubling and showed a risk of students from racial and ethnic minorities being underserved.

The report recommended that state lawmakers define the DOE's role in closing achievement gaps more clearly and that the department be required to provide regular updates to the Legislature.
