(Grand Forks, nD) --  A $4.2 million-dollar federal grant for the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center will help the University develop a cheaper and more efficient way to produce hydrogen.

Researchers are working on producing so-called "green hydrogen" production, which is a renewable way to separate natural gas into hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and capture the CO2 rather than release it back into the atmosphere. The college will make advanced electrolyzer tech and components to further reduce costs and increase efficiency of clean hydrogen production.

The U.S. Department of Energy says regional clean hydrogen hubs, tax incentives created through the Inflation Reduction Act, and ongoing DOE hydrogen program research, will help reduce clean hydrogen prices to $1 per kilogram.
