North Dakota State Representative Hagret opposes push to eliminate property tax

(Fargo, ND) -- A North Dakota state representative who serves on the legislature's Taxation Committee calls a constitutional initiative aimed at eliminating property tax in the state a "Trojan horse".

"The first issue I have with it is there is absolutely no revenue replacement. You stop collecting at the local level and hand it over to the state," said Jared Hagert, a republican who represents District 20.

Hagert says eliminating property tax "is only a trap that will only harm citizens".

Hagert says the initiative does nothing to prevent local governments from increasing fees or expanding their budgets, all while shifting the cost of local services onto the state and further away from those impacted."

The group promoting the initiative needs to submit 31,164 valid signatures by July 8th in order for the measure to appear on the ballot.

Hagret appeared on The Flag's "What's on Your Mind".
